BOISE, Idaho - The Southern Miss men's tennis team wrapped up its competition at the Boise State SpringHill Suites Invitational, falling to Utah 4-2.
Southern Miss dropped to 14-8 on the season while Utah improved to 10-6.
The Golden Eagles opened the match with an early 1-0 lead after taking two of the three wins doubles. Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin topped Devin Lane and Slim Hamza on court 1 by a score of 8-4. Utah's Dmytro Mamedov and Alejandro Medinilla (UU) defeated Benjamin Feldmann and Vasco Valverde 8-5 at No. 2. Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar then clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Ben Tasevac and Cedric Willems.
Utah evened the score at 1-1 when Medinilla downed Feldmann 6-0, 6-0 on court 3. Lane (UU) defeated Valverde on court 4, 6-3, 6-0 to give Utah a 2-1 edge. Frost then posted a 6-2, 6-1 over Mamedov (UU) at No. 1 as the Golden Eagles tied the match at 2-2.
Utah finished the match with two more wins at No. 6 and No. 5. Tasevac (UU) took a three-set match from Brad Marriott, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 before Willems battled Alvarado at No. 5 to clinch match-point with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5).
Southern Miss returns to action on April 5 when the Golden Eagles travel to Belmont.
