PALM CITY, Fla. - Senior Paula Alvarado's No. 1 singles win over Dor Amir gave the Southern Miss men's tennis a 4-3 win over Northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles improved to 8-7.
"This was a great team effort to bounce back and win 4-3 after losing a close doubles point in a tie break," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "NIU was the runner-up in the MAC conference last year and were having a good season including a close 3-4 loss to #72 Marquette. Brad Marriott, Paulo Alvarado, Juan Escobar, Chao-Yu Huang pulled off 4 decisive wins in singles. "
The Huskies (11-5) won two of the three doubles to capture the doubles' point. Alvarado and Juan Escobar lost to Axel Lagerlof and Dor Amir 8-2 on court 1. The Golden Eagles evened the match after Vasco Valverde and Chao-Yu Huang posted an 8-3 win over Matt Lynch and Jovan Zeljkovic at No. 3. NIU clinched the point with a hard-fought 8-6 win as Frederic Cadieux and Simon Formont defeated Alex Doleac and Brad Marriott at the two-spot.
In singles, Southern Miss evened the match at 1-1 when Marriott defeated Lynch 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 before Huang put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Formont on No. 5.
NIU tied the match 2-2 as Cadieux knocked off Doleac 7-6, 6-3 on court 2. Southern Miss answered at No. 4 where Escobar beat Zeljkovic 6-4, 6-4 for the 3-2 lead. NIU recorded its third point of the match in tying the match when Valverde won the first in 6-1 over Lagerlof before dropping the final two sets 6-4, 6-2.
The match came down to the court one where Alvarado fell 7-5 to Amir in the first set, but rallied to take the next two 7-6 (1) and 6-4 to seal the win.
Southern Miss remains in south Florida when the Golden Eagles will play Buffalo at 9:30 a.m.
