HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team dropped a match on Friday as UAB edged the Golden Eagles, 4-3 at the USM Tennis Courts.
Southern Miss dropped to 10-5 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA play while UAB improved to 10-6 and 1-0.
Southern Miss took the early 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles' points with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Andrew Goodwin and Matt Frost defeated David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz (UAB) by a score of 8-5. The freshmen combo of Benjamin Feldmann and Vasco Valverde downed Chris Helliar and Lucas Dirube (UAB), 8-5 to clinch the points. Rafael Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto (UAB) knocked off Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar on court 3, 8-4.
The Golden Eagles started off the singles strong as Valverde put the home team up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court 5 against Pinto. Goodwin followed shortly with a straight-set win on court 2 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Puetz.
UAB then fought back to take the remaining singles. Helliar defeated Alvarado, 6-4, 6-0 on court 4 while Zimmerman downed Frost on court 1, 6-2, 6-3. The Blazers knotted the match at 3-3 when Rondino outlasted Feldmann, 7-5, 6-4. Dirube then clinched the final point on court 6 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Inaki Belloso.
Southern Miss will be back in action on Monday, Mar. 11 against Youngstown State at 12 p.m. at the USM Tennis Courts.
