HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team completed a pair of sweeps Saturday at the USM Tennis Courts after posting 7-0 wins over UNO and Alcorn State to improve to 10-4 on the season.
"Despite the weather conditions today, I thought our team played hard," Coach Ki Kroll said. "I thought winning the doubles gave us momentum heading into singles play against UNO. We had some tough matches, but the guys were able to keep their focus and get the job done.
"We continued to play well against Alcorn State and get another victory."
The Golden Eagles opened the match against UNO winning the doubles point as Matt Frost and Andrew Goodwin downed Rui Silva and Ricardo Campos (UNO) 8-5 on court 1. Benjamin Feldmann and Vasco Valverde defeated Vinay Kamineni/Guillermo Aylon (UNO) 9-7. Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar battled Hossam Meligy/Chris Appelgren (UNO) on court 3 before the match was suspended with the score tied at 8-8.
The Black and Gold swept through the singles, but not without a few battles in first sets. Frost made quick work of Silva at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-1. Alvarado battled back from a set down on court 4 to take a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win against Kamineni. Feldmann clinched the match on court 3 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Meligy.
Rounding out the singles, Goodwin topped Campos 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 while Inaki Belloso defeated Lovro Curcija, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 and Valverde downed Aylon on court 5 by a score of 7-6 (2), 6-1.
In the second match, the Golden Eagles continued its run knocking Alcorn State, 7-0. Goodwin and Valverde started doubles with an 8-0 win over Bhavratan Singh/Maxim Tkachenko (ALCNM) on court 2 followed by Inaki Belloso and Brad Marriott defeating Garry Amor/Vitali Vasileuski (ALCNM) 8-3 on court 3. Frost and Feldmann battled Ernesto Santillian/Ivan Umnikov (ALCNM) to a 6-6 tie before suspending the match.
The Eagles swept the singles as Frost defeated Santillian, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 followed by Goodwin with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Umnikov at No. 2 singles. Alvarado knocked off Tkachenko at No. 3 by a score of 6-4, 6-0.
Rounding out the singles' play included Valverde defeating Amor at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2; Belloso downed Vasileuski 6-3, 6-2 on court 5 and Marriott downing Singh 6-1, 6-1 on court 6.
The Golden Eagles will take to the court on Mar. 8 when they host UAB at 1 p.m. at the USM Tennis Courts.
