LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior Alex Doleac's 5-6 (4), 6-5 (4), 6-5 (7) over Cooper Bridge clinched the match as the Southern Miss men's tennis team defeated UC Riverside 4-3 Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.
"This was our first doubles loss," Head Coach Zubin Engineer said. "The team bounced back with Alex Doleac playing inspired tennis to clinch the decider to win 4-3."
The Highlanders won two of the three doubles to take the first point of the match. Doleac and Brad Marriott fell to Cooper Bridge and Michael Carella 6-4 at No. 1. At No. 3, Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar lost to Julian Ruffin and Marcus Vizcarra 6-4 to clinch the point. The duo of Vasco Valverde and Chao-Yu Huang defeated Jack Felich and Calvin Ngo 6-3 at the two spot.
UCR opened singles with a win at No. 3 when Valverde lost to Ruffin 6-0, 6-2 for the 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles evened the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 5. Alvarado defeated Luis Gastao 6-2, 6-2 while Huang downed Ngo 6-3, 6-3 to put Southern Miss up 2-1.
UCR evened the score at 2-2 when Alvarado captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Luis Gastao and Huang defeated Ngo 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. Juan Escobar put the Golden Eagles up 3-2 with a 6-5 (1), 6-5 (4) win over Sean Yun at No. 6.
The Highlanders tied the match again with a 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Marriott at No. 2, setting up the final match. Doleac battled back after dropping the first set 6-5 (5). Then took the second set 6-5 (4). The final set also went to a tie-breaker with Doleac fighting to a 6-5 (9-7) win to clinch the match.
Southern Miss returns to action on Feb. 7 when the Golden Eagles travel to Ole Miss for a pair of matches.
