HATTIESURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team captured a pair of 7-0 victories here Sunday afternoon, defeating both Nicholls State and Jackson State at the USM Tennis Courts.

The Golden Eagles improved to 3-1 on the campaign, while Nicholls State fell to 4-2. Nicholls had beaten C-USA foe SMU earlier this spring and its only previous loss came against Texas A&M. Jackson State dropped a decision at William Carey Saturday afternoon.

"It was a really good day for us," said Southern Miss men's tennis coach Ki Kroll of his team's two victories during the day. "The first match was a tough one, but everyone came out to play and I was pretty excited about the result. I am especially happy with our doubles from our first match so I feel like we are making some good strides in that way, and everyone also fought hard in singles."

The duo of Matt Frost (Herford, U.K.) and Andrew Goodwin (Alpharetta, Ga.) upended Roy Knight and James Russell of Nicholls in the No. 1 doubles match 8-4, while Paulo Alvarado (Manta, Ecuador) and Juan Escobar (Manta, Ecuador) defeated Evan Karatzas and Damian Despotovski 8-2 to get the point heading into singles play.

The Golden Eagles then captured four straight-set victories including a 6-3, 6-2 decision for Frost over Dmitry Kozionov at No. 1, which clinched the match for the home school.

Only Vasco Valverde (Lisbon, Portugal) and Escobar were pushed to three sets in singles, but Valverde defeated Knight 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 at No. 5 and Escobar overcame Russell 2-6, 6-5, 10-6 at No. 6.

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles did not surrender a set in any of their matches and Brad Marriott (London, England) was the only player to blank his opponent, Philip Barnes, 6-0 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

The Golden Eagles return to action Feb. 1, when they travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invite and open up the tourney that day against the host Runnin' Rebels.
