Men's Tennis Team Picks Up Second Win With 7-0 Victory Over Jackson State
The Golden Eagles improve to 2-0.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team picked up its second win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Jackson State on Sunday at the USM Tennis Courts.
This was another great team effort," Coach Zubin Engineer said. "This match was a good test for what we need to do further into the season."
Southern Miss (2-0) opened the match with winning two of the three doubles. Vasco Valverde and Chao-Yu Huang defeated Carlos Martinez and Camila Patino (JSU), 6-2 on court 1. Kashyap Ashok and Jose Lugue (JSU) evened the match with a 6-2 win over Brad Marriott and Alex Doleac on court 1. On court 3, Juan Escobar and Grigory Trotsenko defeated Ryan Swanier and Hernan Geria (JSU) to clinch the doubles point.
In singles' action, Brad Marriott defeated Ryan Swanier (JS) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 followed by Chao-Yu Huang knocking off Jose Lugue (JS), 6-0, 6-2. Paulo Alvarado downed Kashyap Ashok (JS) in a tight match, 6-5 (5), 6-1 to clinch the match.
Rounding out the singles' competition, Alex Doleac defeated Camila Patino 6-5, 3-1. Grigory Trotsenko fought back to defeat Hernan Geria (JS) 4-6, 2-6, 6-1. Vasco Valverde battled with Carlos Martinez for a 4-6, 6-5 (5), 1-0 (11-9) win.
Southern Miss returns to action Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in the UNLV Classic.
