- The Southern Miss men's tennis team dropped its first road match, falling to No. 23 Ole Miss, 7-0, Thursday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center on the indoor courts.
The Rebels took the 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition. On court 3, the freshmen duo of Andrew Goodwin and Michael Elortegui lost to Johan Backstrom and William Kallberg (OM), 8-2. Ole Miss clinched the doubles' points after posting an 8-2 win at No. 2 when Nik Scholtz and Jonas Lutjen (OM) (UM) defeated Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar. Rounding out the doubles play, freshmen Matt Frost and Iñaki Belloso lost to Marcel and Chris Thiemann (OM), 8-3.
The Rebels took the momentum into singles' play as No. 27 Marcel Thiemann put Ole Miss up 2-0 after defeating Juan Escobar, 6-3, 6-3. Two freshmen were featured at the No. 1 singles' match. Nik Scholtz (OM) downed Matt Frost, 6-2, 6-3.
Ole Miss eventually clinched the match after No. 98 Jonas Lutjen (OM) defeated Paulo Alvardo, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
Rounding out the singles' play, Iñaki Belloso lost to Chris Thiemann, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. William Kallberg (OM) defeated Brad Marriott, 6-2, 6-4, and Johan Backstrom (OM) knocked off Andrew Goodwin, 6-1, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles return home to host Jacksonville State on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 12 p.m., at the USM Tennis Courts.
