- The Southern Miss men's tennis team captured its season opener, blanking Alcorn State, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the USM Tennis Courts.
"I thought the guys played a good first match and it's a good start for us to build on," Coach Ki Kroll said. "As a very young team, I feel we can only get better, as each match goes by. It should be a fun season to look forward to."
The Golden Eagles started out with a 1-0 lead as the Braves did not have enough players fill the entire lineup. Southern Miss then took a 2-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Alex Doleac and Max De Juan won their doubles match by default because the Braves did not have enough players to fill a complete lineup. USM needed to win only one of the doubles played for the point. Andrew Goodwin and Michael Elortegui downed Alexandr Lidzar and Max Tkachenko, 8-4. Paulo Alvarado and Juan Escobar completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Winfried Weinbeer and Ernesto Santillan.
Southern Miss extended the lead to 3-0 when Goodwin collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 against Tkachenko. Freshman Inaki Belloso followed by a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 5 singles over Lidzar in clinching the match at 4-0.
Freshman Matt Frost captured the No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Santillan. Escobar had to battle from a set down in posting a win at No. 2 singles. Escobar fought back after dropping the first set, 7-5, to take the second set, 6-0, and then completed the win in a 10-3 super tie-breaker in the third set.
Freshman Brad Marriot lost his first set, 6-4, then, bounced back to take the second set, 6-1, before battling to a 14-12 win in the third set over Vitali Vasileuski to complete the sweep for the Eagles.
Southern Miss will travel to No. 24 ranked Ole Miss on Jan. 26 for a 1:30 p.m. start.
