Southern Miss Golfer Matt Lorenz Wins 102nd Alabama State Amateur Championship
Southern Miss rising junior Matt Lorenz captured the 102nd Alabama State Amateur Golf Championship at the Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., over the weekend setting tournament records along the way by finishing with an 18-under, 270 in the 72-hole event.
Lorenz shot rounds of 65, 71, 67 and 67 to capture the event by five strokes, besting Austin Gean of Florence, Ala., who finished in second place. The event featured 144 amateur players from the state of Alabama.
Lorenz beat the late Bubba Major’s long-standing record from 1969 of 271 at Selma Country Club, to establish the lowest total score in this storied championship. His 18-under-par was also the lowest in relation to par in championship history, besting Smylie Kaufman (272 at FarmLinks in 2011) and Michael Johnson (272 at Hoover Country Club in 2013).
Will Cannon also shot 272 at Mountain Brook Club in 2015, with his total 12-under-par on the par 71 layout. Kaufman and Johnson had 16-under-par totals on par 72 layouts, with Major’s a 13-under-par total on the par 71 Selma CC layout.
Over the 72 holes, Lorenz collected one eagle, 25 birdies, 37 pars and nine bogeys, playing consistently all throughout the weekend.
