Golden Eagles Hold Lead after First Day of Sam Hall
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Men’s Golf team will begin tomorrow’s final round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate with three of its’ players occupying the top three spots.
“I’m very pleased with how the team played today,” Coach Jerry Weeks said. “It’s always good to play on a course you’re familiar with and the weather conditions were perfect. We’re going to do whatever we can to finish strong tomorrow.”
Senior Matt Codd, who leads all players with a -3 total, shot a 67 in the second round, the second lowest round of his career, junior Derick Kelting tied his career-low single round of 68, set at the 2015-16 Sam Hall Intercollegiate, in the first round of the tournament and sophomore Walker Kesterson tied his career-low round of 69 in the first round.
The Golden Eagle’s 36-hole total of 564 is the fourth lowest two round score in program history.
Sophomore Matt Lorenz carded a +2 total after the two rounds and redshirt junior Nathan Corchis gathered a +11 over 36-holes.
Freshman Brian Richards is the team’s lowest finishing individual at +4. He is followed by juniors Willie Hammond and Philip Heine at +8, freshman Hunter Atkins at +9 and redshirt junior Vasili Kartos at +10.
The Golden Eagles will be paired with UTSA and Sam Houston State in the third and final round at the Hattiesburg Country Club. Southern Miss will tee beginning at 9:03 a.m. CT from hole 1. Live stats can be followed at Golfstat.com.
