Southern Miss sophomore men's golfer Paul Apyan shot a final-round 69 to lead Southern Miss to an 11th-place finish at the Scenic City Invitational being played at the Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., Tuesday. The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 288 over the final 18 holes to end the two-day event at 874 strokes.
Apyan, a Chattanooga native, ended with a 216 total and placed tied for 26th. Sophomore Wes Carter (Hoover, Ala.) shot a one-over-par 72 in his final circuit to end with a 218 in a 34th-place tie.
Senior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) fired a 73 over his final 18 holes for a 41st-place tie with a 219 stroke mark, while junior Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) shot a 74 to end with a 224 and a 66th-place tie. Freshman Robert Derek Plucienski (Slidell, La.) ended his tournament with a 79 to finish at 230 and tied for 83rd.
Corey Nagy of Charlotte, who shot a 68 in all three rounds, won the individual crown, while his 49er team won the team title with a 54-hole score of 823.
Charlotte was followed by host Chattanooga (829), Oklahoma (847), LSU (854), Middle Tennessee (857), Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Southeastern Louisiana (865), Akron (869), USF (871), Southern Miss, Furman and VCU (875), Louisiana Tech (878), Western Carolina (879), Francis Marion (889) and Mercer (892).
The Golden Eagles return to action, Sept. 25-26, at the Adams Cup of Newport. The event is hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
