Men's Golf Duo Finish in Top Three at Conference USA Championship
Fernandez finished in second-place while Kirby tied for third.
Texarkana, Ark. -- Seniors Casey Fernandez and Drew Kirby finished in the top three at Conference USA Men's Golf Championships, played at the par-72, 6,869-yard Texarkana Country Club.
Fernandez took home runner-up honors after closing with a 72 to finish three-under par, two strokes behind individual champion Juan Munoz of North Texas. He becomes the second Golden Eagle to finish as the runner-up, joining Wes Carter in 2010. The 72 is his 13th round of par or better this year and the 32nd of his career, tying him for fourth most in school history with Justin Emil. His 54-hole score of 213 is also the third lowest for Southern Miss in the C-USA Championship.
The Golden Eagles finished in fifth-place at 10-over par, two strokes behind Charlotte. It is their first top five finish at the C-USA Championship since 2010.
Senior Drew Kirby shot a 75 to finish tied for third-place at one-under par. His 54-hole score of 215 tied his career best, which was previously set at the 2014 Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
Junior Hayes Weathersby and freshman Vasili Kartos tied for 35th-place at nine-over par. Weathersby carded a 75 while Kartos posted a 77. Sophomore Ryan Argotsinger tied for 53rd-place at 13-over par after posting a 77.
The top four teams advanced to tomorrow's match play. No. 1 North Texas faces No. 4 Charlotte, while No. 2 UAB face No. 3 UTEP.
