Southern Miss Men’s Golf Falls in Match Play Semifinal to UTEP in C-USA Championship Tuesday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men’s golf season ended Tuesday afternoon after falling 4-1 to UTEP at the C-USA Championship match play semifinal being played at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark.
The Golden Eagles, which tied for fourth with Middle Tennessee during the 54-hole preliminary event, won a one-hole playoff earlier in the day over the Blue Raiders behind birdies from senior Ryan Argotsinger (Lee’s Summit, Mo) and Matt Codd (Red Deer, Alberta).
The playoff victory lifted the Golden Eagles into the match play round that featured the No. 1 UTEP against No. 4 Southern Miss, while No. 2 North Texas faced No. 3 Charlotte. Charlotte defeated North Texas 5-0 to win the other semifinal match.
In Southern Miss’ lone victory, Argotsinger won holes No. 9 through No. 11 to pull away in his match over Frederik Dreier to win his match 5&4.
Both freshman Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and sophomore Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) lost 1 down to Charles Corner and Andreas Sorensen, repsectively. Lorenz rallied late in his match by winning four of five holes late but dropped the No. 18 hole 5-4 on strokes.
Freshman Walker Kesterson (Hartsburg, Mo.) dropped his match 3&2 to Nicklas Phil and Codd lost 1 down to Aaron Terrazas.
It was the Golden Eagles’ first appearance in match play since the league instituted it for the 2015 tournament and the program’s highest finish in the event since tying for second in 2010.
