Southern Miss Opens Florida Atlantic Slomin Autism Invitational Friday in Fourth Place
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Sophomore Derick Kelting (Amarillo, Texas) shot a one-under par 71 to lead Southern Miss after the opening day of the Slomin Autism Invitational Friday at the Squire Course of the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The Golden Eagles posted a team round of eight-over 296 to hold fourth place in the 13-team field. The squad finds themselves just seven strokes behind leader UCF, who notched a 289. Jacksonville State ranks second at 290, while Georgetown is in third at 291. Kelting holds a five-way tie for fourth and just three strokes behind leader Manuel Elvira of UCF, who tallied a 68.
The trio of senior Ryan Argotsinger (Lee's Summit, Mo.), junior Matt Codd (Red Deer, Alberta) and sophomore Willie Hammond (Southlake, Texas) each posted a 75 to hold a 25th-place tie, while freshman Matt Lorenz (Gulf Shores, Ala.) added a 77 for a 40th-place tie.
Following Southern Miss in the team scoring was Connecticut, Northern Illinois and Florida Gulf Coast at 298, Morehead State at 302, DePaul and host Florida Atlantic at 304, Stetson at 305, Hartford at 307 and Murray State at 316.
