Southern Miss Climbs, Lorenz Shoots Career Round
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men’s golf team fired a seven-over 287, the second best round of the season, to climb two spots on the team leaderboard during the second day of the Tiger Invitational. The Golden Eagles are tied for 5th overall heading into tomorrow’s round. Matt Lorenz led the Golden Eagles with a four-under 68, a new career-low round.
The sophomore collected eight birdies on the day, including going one-under on five-of-six consecutive holes. His 10 birdies, eight of them collected today, give him the second most total birdies in the field of 93 golfers. Lorenz will be the third Southern Miss golfer on the course tomorrow morning when he tees off on Hole 1 at 9:50 a.m. His second round of 18 helped him vault 45 spots and he is now positioned in an eight way tie for 19th at one-over 145.
Nathan Corchis tallied an even 72 today and is still Southern Miss’ top player at the 7,149 yard, Par 72 Grand National Lake Course. He struggled early in the round, sitting three-over three holes in, but closed out the front nine by going two-under, one-over for the entire front nine. The Water Sound, Fla. product capped off the round by going one-over on the back nine. He is in a five way tie for 9th at two-under 142.
Matt Codd’s one-over 73 lifted him four spots into a 10 way tie for 49th and he’s rounded up a five-over 149 through 36 holes, Brian Richards sits tied for 62nd, eight-over 152 total, after a seven-over 79 day and Derick Kelting rose 11 places to stand tied for 73, 10-over 154 through two days, after shooting two-over 74 today.
Paired with Kennesaw State and Georgia State, Southern Miss will start the last 18 holes at 9:30 and will tee off every 10 minutes until 10:10. Live stats for tomorrow’s round, and the previous rounds, can be found at Golfstat.com.
