Five Bowl Game Memories: 2008 New Orleans Bowl
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- With the Walk-On's Independence Bowl against Florida State just six days away, SouthernMiss.com takes a look back at five of the Golden Eagles' fondest moments in postseason play. This focus is on the 2008 New Orleans Bowl, where Michael McGee's blocked field goal in overtime concluded a 30-27 win over Troy.
Britt Barefoot managed to push a 39-yard attempt off the left upright and through for a three-point USM lead in the opening of overtime.
On Troy's ensuing drive, Glusman lined up at the left hashmark for a 28-yard attempt, but his try was smothered at the line by McGee.
Austin Davis threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-34 passes for USM, who ended the season on a five-game win streak.
Gerald Baptiste and Johnathan Massey posted TD receptions and Damion Fletcher gained 78 yards on 14 carries with a TD for Southern Miss.
Behind 27-17 with nine minutes left, the Eagle defense stopped Troy on a 4th-and-1 from their 39, and five plays later Davis found Massey wide open for a 35-yard touchdown that put the team within three after the extra point.
The Trojans went three-and-out on the next drive, and Fletcher's 22-yard dash helped set up Barefoot's 46-yard attempt with 2:50 to play.
The Trojans took an early advantage on a 17-yard fumble return in the opening minute, but Davis threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Baptiste only 48 seconds later.
