Football Practice Report: November 24

Nov. 24, 2015

Venue: Joe P. Park Practice Facility
Format: Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Shorts
Upcoming: Practice (3:45 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25)

Report: The Golden Eagles returned to the practice field on Tuesday afternoon in preparation for the Conference USA Western Division Championship at Louisiana Tech this Saturday in Ruston, La. Southern Miss worked at cleaning up mistakes from Saturday's game as well as preparing for the upcoming clash with LA Tech. The practice lasted two and a half hours with the team working with position groups, as well as offense vs. defense drills. As always, special teams and ball security was an emphasis during practice.

Head Coach Todd Monken
When you started the season there were really two wide receivers that have proven themselves in games (Casey Martin and Mike Thomas); how important is it that other young guys have stepped up?
"D.J. (Thompson) has had a good year. He has really come a long way since the first year we were here. The first year we redshirted him because he played as a freshman and really should've played. He has just continued to improve. Luckily, we haven't gotten banged up but when we needed the younger guys to come in and make plays they have. Jordan Mitchell and Korey Robertson are both going to be good players. They just haven't played. Coming into this year, they both hadn't gotten to play but they have stepped up and will both be good players. It's been nice to know that we have those guys if we need to put them in."

Does the week of Thanksgiving change preparation and if so how?
"It's not really that different. I don't know what Louisiana Tech is going to do. We are going to use the whole day tomorrow to prepare then we will walk through Thursday morning. After that the guys will split up with their position group or however they want to do it and celebrate Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for as a team and staff. It's a blessing to be able to do the things we love. We will spend that day watching football, eating and preparing our bodies to come back on Friday. Then it will be time to get on our buses and head west for a west division showdown."

Wide Receiver Casey Martin
How does it feel to start as a walk-on in Houston to now be a standout on a Southern Miss team trying to get to a Conference Championship?
"It means a lot and I have worked hard every day for it. If you would've told me at the beginning I would end up at Southern Miss playing in a game to go to a conference championship, I would've told you that you were crazy. It's just crazy how things work out when you work hard."

Next Game: at Louisiana Tech (11:00 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, Fox Sports)
