Scoring Points Have Been the Trademark of the Golden Eagles over the Last Two Weeks
The Golden Eagles finish the regular season Saturday at Marshall.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The averages of 54.5 points and 550.5 yards are quite impressive.
They represent the points scored and total yards accumulated by the Golden Eagles over their last two games – a 43-34 victory at Rice and a 66-21 triumph over Charlotte in the team’s final home game last weekend.
Southern Miss has hit their stride offensively, recording back-to-back, 500-plus yard total offensive explosions for the first time since last season. They last accomplished this feat when they tallied 702 and 557 in consecutive games against Rice and UTSA last season, respectively.
Senior running back Ito Smith of Mobile, Ala., continues to sparkle in the ground game for the Golden Eagles with rushing outputs of 152 and 153 yards the last two weeks, as he now falls just 71 yards shy of tying Damion Fletcher (2006-2009) as the school’s leader in all-purpose yards.
Among the wide receiver corps, junior Corey Robertson of Greenwood, Miss., continues to play well as he has posted 250 yards on 14 catches and three touchdown grabs over this two-game winning streak for the 7-4 Golden Eagles. Robertson now has caught a pass in 24 consecutive affairs for Southern Miss.
High school teammate, junior quarterback Kwadra Griggs, has thrown for 552 yards in a pair of starts since returning from injury and has completed 72.4 percent of his passes (42-of-58) over this span with four touchdown throws and no interceptions.
In the kicking game, junior kicker Parker Shaunfield continues to shine at place kicker having now made 15-straight field goals over the last seven games and has now made 17-of-19 this season.
The team look to continue their good fortune against a solid defensive team at Marshall this weekend in the team’s regular season finale. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. CT/2:30 p.m. ET.
