HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A special halftime presentation, as well as members of the Wounded Warrior Project serving as honorary captains, is part of the events surrounding Military Appreciation Day at Southern Miss this Saturday for an 11:30 a.m., Conference USA meeting with Florida Atlantic at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The university will honor the life of Lt. Earl D. "Butch" Aull, a 1964 graduate of Southern Miss and a commissioned officer from its ROTC program at halftime. Lt. Aull was killed in action at the Battle of Ia Drang Valley during the Vietnam War and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his courageous actions as he led members of his company to safety.
Aull's family and friends will present these medals to The University of Southern Mississippi's Army ROTC program to be proudly displayed as a tribute to his life and to serve as an inspiration to the students.
In addition, seven members of the Wounded Warrior Project will be honorary team captains for the day.
Members of the military, whether active, retired or reservist of any of the Armed Forces, can purchase $5 tickets for the contest for themselves as well as their families. In addition, it will be Take a Kid to Game Day and any child 12 and under can receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket by just mentioning "Take A Kid."
