Racheem Boothe named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week
IRVING, Texas -- Southern Miss redshirt-freshman linebacker Racheem Boothe has earned his first-career weekly C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honor for his performance in Saturday's 43-34 win over Rice.
Boothe recorded a career-high 14 tackles, including two for loss, with a forced fumble as the Golden Eagles obtained bowl eligibility for the third consecutive year. One of those stops was a 10-yard sack. He had the most tackles by a Southern Miss defender since Brian Anderson had 16 versus Appalachian State on Sept. 20, 2014.
Boothe's 59 tackles are third in C-USA among freshmen, and his 8.0 TFL are No. 10 in the league and tops among rookies. He is one of four Golden Eagles to rank in the top-13 in the league for sacks (no other team has two). The squad is ranked second in C-USA for total defense, allowing 324.3 yards per game (also No. 21 nationally).
Southern Miss returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against Charlotte for Senior Day. Other promotions include the Softball Run to the Rock 5K, which benefits that program, and Military Appreciation Day, which includes a Seats for Soldiers campaign.
