Cold Weather Energizes Wednesday Practice

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the second straight day, the University of Southern Mississippi football team has practiced in temperatures dipping into the 40s and once again, the Golden Eagles have had a successful practice. Southern Miss returns home to Carlisle-Faulkner Field this Saturday as the Golden Eagles play host to new Conference USA member FAU.

"Today was good," head coach Todd Monken stated after the workout. "The guys' spirits were good. The guys that were in there are working so it is good to get them work."

The team practiced in full pads on Wednesday after a Tuesday workout in just shorts and helmets. Both nights, the temperatures drifted in to the 40s. When asked about the weather, Monken, who came to Southern Miss from Oklahoma State, joked, "it feels like I am back up north."

The Southern Miss football team concludes preparation for Saturday's tilt with Florida Atlantic with a closed practice on Thursday afternoon followed by a walk through on Friday.

USM and FAU have never met on the gridiron. Florida Atlantic is a first-year member of Conference USA and will be making their first trip to Hattiesburg.

The game will be aired on CSS, marking the ninth game this season that Southern Miss will be on television.

Southern Miss against Florida Atlantic will serve as both Military Appreciation and Take a Kid to the Game Day. Toe meets leather between the Golden Eagles and Owls on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11:30 a.m. at The Rock.

In addition to Military Appreciation Day, the Southern Miss game against Florida Atlantic will also serve as Take a Kid to the Game Day. Any child age 12 and under will receive free admission with the purchase of an adult ticket to the game.
