Punter Zac Everett Pins Opponents Back Deep for Southern Miss
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Heading into the 2017 season, much of the talk around the Southern Miss football program centered around the replacement of a four-year starting quarterback.
What wasn’t discussed as much, was having to replace four-year punter in Tyler Sarrazin, who averaged 40.9 yards per punt over 208 career boots. Sarrazin’s precision punting made all the difference in helping the Golden Eagles pin back its opponent deep in their own end.
The quest for his replacement began last spring and it was a two-person battle between true freshman Briggs Bourgeois and redshirt freshman Zac Everett. After sharing the duties for the first game, Everett, from Saraland, Ala., won the position and has enjoyed a stellar initial campaign for the Golden Eagles and has excelled for Southern Miss.
Everett averages 40.7 yards per punt over 50 attempts this season, including a season-long 62 yarder against Southern. In all, he has had eight punts of 50 or more yards, while he has also forced 15 fair catches and pinned the foes 18 times inside their 20-yardline.
His net punting average this fall has been 40.1 yards, as opponents have managed just 81 return yards on just 12 returns.
His best game of the season may have come last Saturday at Tennessee. Earning the team’s special teams player of the week award, Everett average 45.6 yards over eight punts and including five inside the Volunteers 20. His longest punt of the game came at 60 yards, which was the second time he had collected a 60-yard or more attempt in his career.
Everett will continue to use his leg this weekend as the Golden Eagles travel to Houston to face Conference USA foe Rice. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m., and can be seen on Stadium on Facebook.
