HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi football team continued practiced at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility in preparation for their ninth game of the season as the Golden Eagles travel to Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
The Louisiana Tech series is the third longest football rivalry in Southern Miss history (44 games) behind only Memphis (63) and Louisiana-Lafayette (51). The game this weekend will be the first time the two teams will square off as Conference USA opponents.
After a tough practice, head coach Todd Monken spoke of the challenges for directing such a young team.
"The bottom line is; we've just got to find a way to get our guys to understand that the game day is a result of what you put in during the week and the offseason," Monken said. "We have to a better job and have a much better Wednesday. I was expecting another step and we just didn't have it."
The Golden Eagles have won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs, including winning the last three match ups - all three close, low scoring games. Because of injuries, Southern Miss will once again go into this weekend's game with a young defense.
When asked about the growth of the defensive secondary, Monken stated, "At times it feels like they are getting better, which they are. Then you throw in injuries, which stops them from being able to practice at full speed. That has probably been the hardest thing...but they have been doing fine. They've been battling. They just have to keep fighting and scratching."
The Golden Eagles continue the week with practice on Thursday before embarking for Ruston, La. on Friday afternoon. The game will be carried on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, including flagship station, Rock 104, 104.5 FM, in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area, as well as being televised on the CBS Sports Network (channel 735 on Comcast Cablevision in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area).
