1958 National Championship Team Set for Book Signing Next Saturday

Nov. 6, 2008

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - A Season To Remember: 1958 Southern Miss Football, a new book that chronicles the historic national championship football season by the university and written by John Cox, the Voice of the Golden Eagles, will be available beginning on Nov. 14, at Barnes and Noble at Southern Miss on the campus.

The book will be released as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the squad winning the inaugural United Press International College Division National Championship, that will also include a banquet in the suites at the south end zone Club level of Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium on Friday, Nov. 14, a book signing by the members of the team at Barnes and Noble at Southern Mississippi from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Sat., Nov. 15, and recognition at the Southern Miss-East Carolina football game on Nov. 15.

Tickets are still available for the 6 p.m., reception and dinner next Friday night for $30 through the Southern Miss Athletic Ticket Office. Dress is casual, and parking is available at Loyalty Field. Tickets are $30 and the public is invited. Tickets for the event must be purchased by Nov. 10.

In 1958, Coach Thad (Pie) Vann was beginning his 10th season at what was then known as Mississippi Southern College and as always expectations were high for his Southerners.

But no one expected the Southerners to produce the first perfect season in school history with a 9-0 record, and to challenge for and win the first ever United Press International College Division National Championship.

The book tells the story of that team, one that overcame the odds and a challenging schedule to become one of the greatest teams in school history. During that season, the Southerners recorded memorable victories over Memphis State, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech and had a thrilling goal line stand to beat Chattanooga on Thanksgiving Day that locked up the national championship.

The team is covered from spring practice to the final game and takes you inside the 1958 team with the players and coaches that won the championship.

Cox has also authored a written history of the Southern Miss football program, Rock Solid: Southern Miss Football.
