Football Looking to Prove Themselves Through the Air Saturday at Tennessee

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Success in the passing game should prove to be critical phase of the game for Southern Miss this weekend.

The Golden Eagles average 263.6 yards per game passing and are hitting their receivers at a rate of 56.1 percent this season.

Whether it is sophomore Keon Howard or junior Kwadra Griggs calling the signals, the Golden Eagles will have to figure out a way to throw against the top pass defense in the country.  The Golden Eagles travel to Knoxville, Saturday, to face Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee in a 6:30 p.m. CT/7:30 p.m. ET game that will be televised on the SEC Network.

The Volunteers allow the fewest total of passing yards per game at 148.6, which ranks No. 1 in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Tennessee has limited three opponents to under 100 yards passing this season including Kentucky last week, which the Vols stifled for only 82 yards.

Each of the Golden Eagle quarterbacks that have played this season has enjoyed success throwing the ball in 2017.

Howard, who has started the last four games for Southern Miss, has completed 60.1 percent of his passes (89-of-104) for 1,099 yards with eight touchdowns and a four interceptions, while Griggs has tallied 1,010 yards on 52.2 percent of his passes (71-of-136) with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

This season, Southern Miss has thrown for at least 200 yards in each of its eight games this season and thrown at lleast one scoring pass in every game. The team also has completed a pass of at least 40 yards in each of their games this season.

Fourteen Golden Eagles have grabbed receptions this season, including five with 15 or more catches. Redshirt junior Korey Robertson leads the way for Southern Miss with team bests for catches (43), yards (530) and touchdown catches (7).
