Upcoming: Wednesday (3:10 p.m.)

Report: Southern Miss opened its final month of the regular season with a practice in full pads Tuesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The Golden Eagles, 5-3 overall 3-1 in Conference USA, vie for their second consecutive victory this weekend as they entertain Charlotte at M.M. Roberts Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at The Rock and can be seen on the American Sports Network as well as be heard on one of the affiliates on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.

Coach Jay Hopson
On Charlotte’s quarterback Hassan Klugh:
“(He’s) Definitely done a great job. He’s a dual threat guy that can do the things you need to do – Zone Read, Power Read, those things. He’s 2-1 since becoming the starter, so we know we have an excellent football player.”

On Charlotte’s road performance:
“It’s a well-coached football, a good football team. Every time you’re in conference play you know each and every Saturday you’ve got to get ready for a battle.”

On Charlotte’s running back Khalif Phillips:
“He’s a good player. He was a good player last year. He’s been a good player all season. I think he’s just as good every time he comes out. We understand they’re a talented football team and it’s gonna be a battle. Always is.”

On having players back from injury:
“We’re getting some guys back healthy. We need to continue and it’s good to have [Sherrod Ruff] back. We’ve got a few guys banged up and we’ll know something else on another one or two tomorrow, so hopefully we get some guys. Knock on wood, we’re fairly healthy. Just hoping to be at full strength.”

Assistant Coach John Wozniak

On Allenzae Staggers:
“He’s probably got more of a football IQ than we gave him credit. He’s really taken to it quick and a lot of the times with junior college guys the second year is better, it was like that with a lot of guys I’ve had. With him he’s really come on in a hurry and being here in the spring helps. He’s doing a good job.”

On Staggers being a steady receiver for the team this year:
“He’s got a mental toughness that helps him make the contested catches, regardless of anyone else in the unit, that’s a valuable thing for him to have.”

WR Allenzae Staggers
On a scale of 1-10 how comfortable are you now with your new teammates:
“I’m at a 10 now. Back in the spring, I wasn’t communicating with my teammates. I was just getting here so I didn’t know too many people. As the summer got going, the chemistry that we have picked up. We bonded. We’re brothers now.”

On his ability to produce:
“Communication. Hanging with each other in all the meetings. Talking. Film work.”

On having a strong immediate impact:
“It feels good, but I don’t let that be my focus. I continue to try and outwork myself each week. I try and do better than I did the last week.  Nick put it in my head every day saying let’s go, do better and come on and stuff like that.”
