HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Under another day of ideal conditions, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles hit the practice field on Wednesday inside the Joe P. Park practice facility as they prepare for Saturday's Conference USA matchup at Rice.
Redshirt sophomore Arsenio Favor took the first-team repetitions again on Wednesday as he prepares for his first career start. Following the practice, first-year head coach Ellis Johnson said he was pleased with the progress the young signal caller is making.
"He's coming along pretty well," said Johnson. "You can imagine missing all of the spring and preseason practices and only being back about two-and-a-half weeks of football reps, but he's had a good week. Physically, throwing the ball, he's always been as good as any of them. The fundamentals, technique, accuracy and velocity (are all there)."
With the eighth contest of the 2012 season looming, the Golden Eagles added more contact in their special teams situations and have instituted extra drills in all areas to grow as a young team.
The Golden Eagles trail 2-1 in the series all-time with the Owls but used three third-quarter touchdowns to pull away to a 48-24 victory in Hattiesburg in 2011.
Saturday's game is set for a Noon kickoff and will be broadcast on CSS (Ch. 25 SD, Ch. 400/401 HD on Comcast) with Dave Raymond, N.D. Kalu and Leila Rahimi calling the action. It can also be heard on the IMG Sports Network with John Cox and Vic Purvis.
