Football Eagles Return to Practice Field for Rice Prep on Tuesday
Oct. 23, 2012
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss returned to the practice field on Tuesday afternoon to prepare for their second Conference USA road trip of the season at Rice on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles worked out for over two hours under ideal conditions in helmets and shoulder pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, and Tuesday was intense and physical, as usual.
"It was a good, physical practice," said coach Ellis Johnson. "We hit a lot and got a lot of contact done in special teams. The free period was used for (first team) on (first team). I thought it was a great fundamental day - a good, physical Tuesday like we wanted to have."
Southern Miss also appeared to practice with an extra level of intensity and emotion as they get started on the final five games of the season.
"A lot of things came off the table with that last loss," Johnson added. "The thing we told them the other day is that we need to have as much fun for those seniors as we can and it's the first day of spring practice for 2013. Every day we'll get better as a football team."
The Golden Eagles trail 2-1 in the series all-time with the Owls but used three third-quarter touchdowns to pull away to a 48-24 victory in Hattiesburg in 2011. Redshirt sophomore Arsenio Favor is expected to earn the start in the game and the Montgomery, Ala., native took the majority of the first-time repetitions in practice on Tuesday.
Saturday's game is set for a Noon kickoff and will be broadcast on CSS (Ch. 25 SD, Ch. 400/401 HD on Comcast) with Dave Raymond, N.D. Kalu and Leila Rahimi calling the action. It can also be heard on the IMG Sports Network with John Cox and Vic Purvis.
