Keon Howard Comes Up Big in First Victory as Golden Eagle Starting Quarterback
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss sophomore quarterback Keon Howard got the call last Saturday and his solid play for the Golden Eagles led them to a 31-29 Conference USA victory over UTSA in San Antonio.
The victory improved the Golden Eagles to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in C-USA. The victory upped the team’s road record to 2-0 this season after they captured their first win in three tries at the Alamodome.
Howard collected his first multi-touchdown throwing game with three scoring passes, ending the game with 212 yards throwing. He completed 75 percent of his throws in the process, finishing on 15-of-20 completions in the contest.
Down 13-7 late in the third quarter, Howard engineered three-straight drives that led to 21 unanswered points and gave the visitors a lead that they did not relinquish the remainder of the contest.
Those three touchdowns came over three-straight plays, marking the first time since the Louisiana Tech game in 2015 that they had done that.
“I feel like he managed the game real well and graded out real well,” said Southern Miss second-year coach Jay Hopson. “He played a really good game. Coach (Shannon) Dawson and I both thought he would have a really big game and he did. He's a humble guy and he knows that's just one game. We're pleased with the way he came out and performed.”
While the Golden Eagles have not named a starter for this weekend’s homecoming contest against UTEP, both Howard and redshirt junior Kwadra Griggs will both be ready if they get the call.
It is homecoming week on the Golden Eagle campus and Southern Miss looks to win its third-straight season when they welcome back their alumni. Game time is set for 6 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
