HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team continued its preparation for this Saturday's Conference USA opener against FIU with a 2 ½ hour workout here Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.

The Golden Eagles entertain the Panthers in a 3 p.m., contest at Roberts Stadium as the two schools meet for the first time in their respective football histories.

FIU, which began football during the 2002 season, begins play as a Conference USA member with its first league game, after spending the last eight years in the Sun Belt Conference.

Southern Miss will play a Panther squad that comes off an open week after starting the season 0-4.

The Golden Eagles enjoyed its normal Wednesday afternoon session that includes red zone, score zone and third down situations.

For Southern Miss coach Todd Monken, the Golden Eagles have to be ready to play a team which also looks to start league play with a victory.

"What they do is really good football," said Monken. "They understand how to attack your defense, where the holes are. As their talent improves and their players improve within the system, they are going to improve because they are doing good things.

"That is the same on defense. If you look at what they do schematically, they are doing good things."

For the game on Saturday, the athletics department has several promotions planned, including a pregame youth cheer clinic, as well as Mississippi Junior and Community College Day along with the school's annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.

The youth cheer clinic is set to run from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday at the Payne Center, while junior and community college faculty, staff and students can get $10 upper deck admission to the game with their college identification.

The annual Breast Cancer Awareness game will include the Golden Eagles wearing pink items during the game on Saturday, as well as special recognition for breast cancer survivors during the contest.
