Report: Southern Miss football continued preparation for its Conference USA opener against North Texas on Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. In addition, the team ran 7-on-7 drills as well as working with individual position groups.

Head Coach Todd Monken
Thoughts on fifth Wednesday in a row with a good practice...
"I think we have more maturity from a player standpoint and we are doing it better from a coach's standpoint. We just have guys that don't wine or complain. We have guys that come out to practice and know what's at stake. They know we have worked all season for this. How we play is how we practice and prepare. It's about how all of us prepare and that's the toughest deal. It's not game day but these are the days that dictate how well you are going to play on Saturday."

How important is having the conference opener at home?
"You want to look in the scorebook and say `Look, we are leading the conference' and it's a divisional game. Every game is important but you only get one request and that's what we wanted. When you choose that and get it then you know you have to take advantage of that. Both years we have had an opportunity to win FIU the first year and last year against Rice. We have had opportunities to win so now is the time to show that we are different. We will do that. Like I've said before, you can't carry over games you can't carry over passing or rushing yards. At the end of the year, there are averages but they are week to week. It's all about how we are going to tackle, block or run. Irrespective of the opponent we have to do it better than they do it."

Defensive Back Picasso Nelson Jr.
How was your first full time experience at safety while getting to play most of the game?
"I think it went well. I made some plays but I made some mistakes too. You just have to take it and just get better at what you messed up at. That's the name of the game. Just getting better at what you can improve on. I felt like this week I have prepared and I've gotten better and plan on facing North Texas on Saturday."
