Southern Miss Football Coach Jay Hopson Holds Weekly News Conference
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss football coach Jay Hopson held his weekly news conference Monday at the Duff Athletic Center as the Golden Eagles get ready for their Conference USA opener against North Texas.
The two teams play at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 30, in a 6 p.m., contest. A webstream is available for the game through c-usa.tv. Please note there is a cost associated to this event.
Here are some of things Hopson said during his news conference:
"Good open week. I thought we practiced hard. We got a lot done. We know we have a tough, excellent football team coming to town. Just watching them on film, North Texas is a very balanced football team. Good quarterback, good running back, good receivers; so offensively they have a lot of weapons. Defensively, they've done a good job. They play hard and aggressive so we know we have a good team coming to town."
On the improvement of UNT's offense:
“Their quarterback does a great job. They have talented receivers, running backs and they are a talented football team. We know we have a talented team coming to town. They have some stars and they do a good job of coaching them. At the end of the day, we know what we have coming in."
On young guys getting reps:
"We got some young guys some reps, but we basically did a lot of fundamental work. Tuesday, we did a lot of fundamentals and Wednesday we went more fundamentals into North Texas prep. We got good work on Wednesday and Thursday. I gave the guys off Friday and Saturday. We'll be back today and ready to go. We got a lot of things done and we'll get more things done this week."
On change in the injuries:
"We're hoping to get three or four back. That's what I'm hoping. Right now, we'll get some of them back out for practice tonight and let them go and see how they feel. I'm feeling optimistic on three or four of them. So that's a good thing.
"I think there's an excellent chance we might be getting Tez (Parks), Julian (Allen), Delmond (Landry) and some of those guys back. Again, we'll see how it goes tonight and Tuesday. We're hoping to get guys back and the break did kind of hit us at a good time just because we were pretty banged up so I'm thinking we'll get four or five guys back."
On UNT Defense:
"They're a unit that plays hard, an aggressive defense. They do a good job of rushing the passer. They're a team that plays hard on both sides."
On the same Mean Green offense coming back from last season:
"We've got film. You have to give credit where credit is due. They're the No. 1 offense in C-USA right now and give credit to their quarterback who has had a heck of a year. A lot of great things. A lot of their receivers can make plays. They've got weapons offensively. Our guys see that."
On George Payne and Picasso Nelson being out for the season:
"I would say probably so. I hate saying it officially, but Picasso probably is for sure. I don't know about George yet. There's a good chance of that."
On Korey Robertson's ability to run after the catch:
"Our receiving core is a talented group. Korey has had a great start to the season. Quez (Watkins) and (Allenzae) Staggers and Isaiah (Jones) to me have had good camps. We have weapons at wide out and of course at running back and quarterback. I've been pleased with Korey, though. He's come to work every day and has worked hard."
