HATTIESBURG, Miss. - With their next opponent looming just four days away, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles returned to the confines of M.M. Roberts Stadium on Tuesday to prepare for the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky.
Southern Miss worked in full pads on Carlisle-Faulkner Field under relatively mild temperatures in the Hub City as they installed their game plan and looked to determine the starting quarterback for this weekend's matchup.
"(The quarterbacks all) did pretty good, but practice is practice," said first-year head coach Ellis Johnson. "We're going to keep working them and we're not ruling out one; we're not ruling out two; we're not ruling out three. We'll see what happens and practice will certainly influence who will start and how we'll tweak the game plan. What we're going to try to do early will also influence (the quarterback decision)."
True freshman Anthony Alford and redshirt junior Chris Campbell saw time against East Carolina on Saturday. The pair combined to go 17-for-35 through the air for 233 yards. Campbell threw an eight-yard scoring strike to Markese Triplett while Alford had a 23-yard rush to set up a one-yard touchdown run.
Against Western Kentucky, the Golden Eagle offense will see a defense that coordinator Steve Buckley said might be the most multiple the team will see all season. Johnson echoed those sentiments on Tuesday.
"They play tough up front and I've noticed on their roster, they have some older guys who have played in some big ball games," Johnson noted. "Their perimeter speed has also been impressive."
The Golden Eagles and Hilltoppers kick off at 6 p.m. from Houchen Industries - L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Ky., on Saturday. The game can be viewed via the online ESPN3.com network and heard on the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
