Football has First Road Test This Saturday at ULM

Sept. 15, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After playing its first two games this season at home, Southern Miss faces the first road challenge of the 2017 football season when they travel to ULM for a 6 p.m., contest Saturday at Malone Stadium in Monroe, La.

The game can be seen via ESPN 3 and also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.

The Golden Eagles (1-1) look for their second-straight victory after shutting out Southern 45-0 at home last weekend.

Southern Miss and ULM renew a series that has been played four times and the Golden Eagles make their first trip to ULM after winning three of the first four tilts in Hattiesburg, the last one a 44-37 triumph in 1993.

This season, the Southern Miss offense has produced 420.5 yards per game mostly behind the play of redshirt junior quarterback Kwadra Griggs.

Griggs makes his second consecutive start this week on the strength of 431 passing yards on 30-of-49 passing with four touchdown passes and no interceptions.

His offensive weapons early on have been plenty.

Senior running back Ito Smith leads the team in rushing with 114 yards and also has the most pass receptions on the squad with 11 for 96. His 210 all-purpose yards rank first on the squad as he continues to march his way up the career chart for that category. He ranks third in all-purpose yards with 4,839, trailing Bubba Phillips by just 109 yards to tie for second place.

Wide receiver, Allenzae Staggers, the senior in his second year with the program, comes off a game in which he tallied game highs for catches (five) and yards (62) after not gaining a reception in the season opener.

Former high school teammate of Griggs, Korey Robertson, has caught 10 passes for a team-best 137 yards. Redshirt freshman Quez Watkins is tied for that team-best yardage with Robertson on just six catches.

That offense goes along with a defense that has been stingy in the early going, allowing just 197 yards per contest which ranks No. 10 nationally in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Senior Tarvarius Moore leads the way with a team-best 11 tackles (six solo) to go along with an interception and a fumble recovery. Fellow senior Kelsey Douglas, who has started both contests this season, ranks second with 10 stops.

In all, the Golden Eagles have tallied 10 tackles for loss, four sacks, a pair of interceptions and two fumble recoveries during the early going.

Southern Miss plays a ULM squad that dropped a 37-29 decision in the Liberty Bowl the first weekend to Memphis in heavy rains. Last week’s game at Florida State was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.

ULM will play at home for the first time this season and look to improve on a 4-8 season a year ago under second-year coach Matt Viator.

Following the ULM contest, the Golden Eagles will enjoy their lone off week before opening Conference USA play, Saturday, Sept. 30, at home against North Texas. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
