Staggers Looking for Stellar Senior Campaign at Wide Receiver for the Golden Eagles

Sept. 13, 2017

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – One game does not a season make.

That rings true for everyone including senior wide receiver Allenzae Staggers, who opened the season with no catches against Kentucky in a 24-17 Golden Eagle setback.

Fast forward one week later and the Woodville, Miss., native registered game highs for catches (five) and receiving yards (62), including his eighth career touchdown catch against Southern that spanned 20 yards in a 45-0 victory over the Jaguars.

Staggers, who holds two of the top five receiving contests in school history, has the most yards catching the football of any current Golden Eagle receiver with 1,227 in 15 career games for an 81.8 yards per game average.

"Staggs had a beautiful catch that didn't count against Kentucky,” said Hopson earlier this week of his senior receiver. “Of course it was out of bounds, but that was a lay out. That was the only touch he got the first week so it was good to get him the ball. The good thing we have with Staggs, along with Quez (Watkins), Isaiah (Jones), Korey (Robertson) and Jaylond (Adams) and the list goes on even in the backfield with T-Rod (Daniels) making plays.”

Staggers certainly has made plays in his short Golden Eagle career, including one game in which he scored on touchdown catches of 75, 81 and 93 yards against Rice at The Rock last fall. He was the first FBS player in 10 seasons to register three scoring catches of 75 yards or longer and his 292 total yards that night receiving is a school record.

In the season finale a year ago, Staggers caught 11 passes for 230 yards on his way to Most Valuable Player honors in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and a 28-21 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.

This year, he looks to continue compiling those outstanding numbers, starting this week at ULM. The Golden Eagles travel to Monroe, Saturday, Sept. 16, for a 6 p.m., contest at Malone Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPN 3 and also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
