Football Practice Report: September 8

Sept. 8, 2015

Venue: Joe P. Park Practice Facility
Format: Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Shorts
Upcoming: Practice (4:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9)

Report: Fresh off of their first game of the season, the Golden Eagle football team returned to the practice field to begin preparation for Saturday's home game against Austin Peay. Southern Miss worked in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts for two and a half hours installing its game plan for the weekend. The Golden Eagles also concentrated on ball security on offense, while the defense worked on forcing turnovers. The team also focused on special teams and late-game situations.

Head Coach Todd Monken
After a big emotional game on Saturday how did the team bounce back with todays practice?
"It was a good Tuesday a lot like last Tuesday. I'm expecting a lot better day tomorrow but today was good."

How do you feel about the young receivers who made an impact in their first game?
"(Jordan Mitchell and Korey Robertson) did some good things. Now consistency is the biggest thing. We can't have a big play and not be getting the calls that force us to punt or take a delay of game because they don't know where to line up. We have to get it done as coaches. How do we stop the mistakes that offset the really big plays? I thought Jordan (Mitchell) did a nice job. He didn't get balls thrown his way but I think he played fast and looked good out there. I'm excited to watch those guys play and continue to play."

You spoke about special teams being an emphasis did the team get good work in today?
"It's been an emphasis since we started. We gave up a kick return for a fast guy when we didn't kick it in the right spot then proceeded to not cover well enough. Then we had on that we kicked into a guy's hand. Other than that everything was good. The rest of the punts were good and the rest of the kickoffs were good. We didn't get many opportunities on punt return but I thought Casey (Martin) did a great job getting one to go into the end zone. On kickoff, we recovered an onside kick and we had another that skied to the five. It's been an emphasis and we will know a lot more as we continue to play. We aren't changing anything we do because it's not broken. We just have to do it better."

Tight End Ricky Parks
With the position change, how comfortable were you this weekend on a scale of 1-10?
"I'd say a ten. I was very comfortable because I've played this position before so it's nothing new to me. I had to get a couple of things down pat but other than that I felt great."

Full Back Daythan Davis
How did it feel to have all of the fan support with that record-breaking attendance?
"It felt great with everyone on the Eagle Walk and then getting out under the lights. Honestly, it was great just looking around and seeing everyone believing in us. It's a new season and the fans believe in us and we are bringing them a new team that's going to be fun to watch."
