HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team continued to get ready for its road challenge this weekend against nationally ranked Nebraska by going through a two-hour, 45-minute practice here Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
Saturday's game is set for 5 p.m., from Lincoln, Neb., and can be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network, including flagship station, Rock 104, 104.5 FM, in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area. The game will also be televised on the Big Ten Network (Comcast in Hattiesburg - channel 472 in HD or 742; DIRECTV - channel 610-2 or 610-2 in HD; Dish Network - 5442 or 5443 in HD).
The Golden Eagles face a Cornhusker squad which won their season opener last Saturday in a 37-34 over Wyoming at home to enter the game ranked No 19 by the Associated Press and No. 22 by the USA Today.
Southern Miss looks to rebound from a home loss to Texas State, despite a solid defensive effort which held the Bobcats to 207 yards by using a mix of veteran and younger players. The defense collected the most plays for loss (11) in a game, since tallying 13 against East Carolina during the 2011 campaign.
First-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken liked what he saw from his defensive squad in the opener and said that he is going to continue to play the defensive guys that give the squad the best chance to win.
"We have got to play the guys that have talent and the guys that are going to continue to get better," said Monken after practice.
The Golden Eagles return to the practice field once more in Hattiesburg Thursday afternoon, before heading to Nebraska on Friday.
This will be Southern Miss' second consecutive appearance in Lincoln after opening last season there at Memorial Stadium.
