Football Practice Report: September 1
Venue: Joe P. Park Practice Facility
Format: Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Shorts
Upcoming: Practice (4:15 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2)
Report: Southern Miss football began game-week preparation with a two and a half hour practice in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The Golden Eagles starters on offense and defense went against the scout team in preparation for Saturday's season opener. The football team conducted team drills, while also using a few periods for individual instruction. The team also participated in 7-on-7 drills as well as ball security exercises. The special teams, which has been an emphasis throughout camp, was also stressed.
Head Coach Todd Monken
How is the team looking health wise?
"We are fine. Everybody has bumps and bruises. Everybody loses players from the NFL to high school football. We are healthy. We can put enough healthy guys on the field to give ourselves a chance to win. It's going to be about who is the most physically tough team; who's the most mentally tough team; and who had the best week of practice. That's who will win the game Saturday night and that's the way it's always been."
How many WR's do you anticipate playing? "I think you always anticipate playing the two deep. It's been like that everywhere I have been. You always anticipate that no matter what offense you run. I don't care if you run the option, the Pro I or the spread you always anticipate at least two deep."
Assistant Coach John Wozniak
How was camp for the wide receivers?
"It's going really well. Mike Thomas had a great camp and we are expecting big things from him. Casey (Martin) has been steady like usual by finding ways to get open and we are really excited about him. D.J. (Thompson) has had a great camp and I think he is set for a great year. Those guys are doing well and we have some young guys doing a great job. Jordan Mitchell has really had an outstanding camp. He has probably been the biggest surprise from the whole thing. Korey Robertson is growing up on learning details and he has made some great plays in camp. I'm really excited about the group."
Wide Receiver Casey Martin
On the differences between going into the first game last year in comparison to this year...
"The difference is night and day. Last year, I had thrown with Nick (Mullens) for about two weeks and maybe not even that much because I didn't run with the ones at the beginning of camp. Now, I have thrown with Tyler (Matthews) and Nick all summer and all of this fall. We are all on the same page with both the quarterbacks."
