HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team continued its preparation for its season-opening game this Saturday against Texas State with practice Wednesday afternoon at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed their last hard practice of the week during the afternoon session as the team switches focus to fine-tuning the game plan as well as going over special teams on Thursday. The team concludes its preparations for the game with a walk-through on Friday before beginning the season against the Bobcats in a 6 p.m., kick off at The Rock on Saturday.
Another hot, sunny south Mississippi afternoon produced the backdrop of the Wednesday afternoon workout in which first-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken described as a much better day for the squad than the previous one.
As game day creeps closer for the Golden Eagles, Monken expects the reality of the football season getting ready to start will begin to sink in tomorrow.
"They will really sense it tomorrow night when the games come on," said Monken as the start of the college season begins Thursday night.
Monken added that it is tough to judge how good the team is heading into the season opener as they have not played any one else yet, but expects to know more following Saturday's contest.
"Come Saturday night at about 10 o'clock, we will know where we are at (for) that moment," said Monken. "We won't know where we are going to be (as the year progresses), but we will know at that moment where we are at."
Tickets for the game, as well as the other four home games, can be purchased by going online at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or by visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office from 8 a.m., - 5 p.m., weekdays.
