Golden Eagles Go Over Situations Saturday in Workout
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team used its Saturday morning workout to give the squad an opportunity to experience things that they might encounter next weekend when they open the season at Mississippi State.
The Golden Eagles, in helmets and shorts, went through their entire game day routine on the Roberts Stadium turf. The practice simulated everything that the squad will go through during a game day, starting with their pregame routines. Southern Miss then went through a full game, focusing on getting the right personnel on the field for the different situations that come up during a contest.
The session was a result of a long, productive three weeks of practice, and the two-hour situational drill helps the squad realize that the start of the season is just a week away.
"Until I said it today that we're a week away, you don't even think about it," said Southern Miss coach Todd Monken. "You think about what we've got to do today. I'm sure it will build as we get closer to the end of the week. It already started the last couple of days of this week where we started preparing for Mississippi State. It's like `OK it's here, because we're going over looks we're going to get from them.'"
Southern Miss and Mississippi State will meet at Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field in a 6:30 p.m., kickoff next Saturday. The game will be televised on the SEC Network (Dave Neal, play-by-play; Andre Ware, analyst; Laura Rutledge, reporter) and also can be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
