Southern Miss Football Practice Report: August 18

Aug. 18, 2016

Venue: Joe P. Park Practice Facility
Format: Full Pads
Upcoming: 7:10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. (Friday, Aug. 19)

Report: The Southern Miss football team returned to the practice fields Thursday morning for a two and a half hour practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The Golden Eagles worked out in full pads as they opened the workout with special teams and then went through several individual and team periods. The Golden Eagles then finished the day running sprints and first-year coach Jay Hopson joined in on the last one.

Head coach Jay Hopson
On the team's conditioning efforts...
"I live by a code: I would never ask a man to do something I wouldn't do. At the end of the day, they're working hard and I'm proud of the effort, and especially with the dog days and two-a-days, we have to dig in."

On how he feels after running with the team...
"I feel fine. I'm just old, an old man."

On practice as a whole...
"I thought we had good energy and competition. We will go back to the film like always. With two-a-days there's always room for fundamentals and assignments to be better. But at the end of the day it was a good day and we have to keep doing it."

Xavier Thigpen, Defensive Line
On how defense is coming along in the last week of camp...
"We just are creating turnovers everyday punching the ball out, interceptions, and sacks; just have to keep building on that every day to become the top defense in the conference."

On surprising newcomers to the defense...
"Allen Fails...he's showed a lot - speed, quickness, and energy; seems like he doesn't get tired. He's going to be real good for us - a special guy."
