HATTIESBURG, Miss. - First-year Southern Miss football coach Todd Monken rewarded his squad Friday night by cancelling its scheduled night workout and instead allowed his team to enjoy Movie Night.
The Golden Eagles, which practiced for 2 hours, 45 minutes during the morning session in full pads, were supposed to return to the practice fields in the evening for the squad's third two-a-day practice schedule this week. Instead, the team went to a local theater to enjoy an early evening film.
Southern Miss practiced at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility for the first time in three days and enjoyed its third-straight day of comfortable temperatures during the morning workout.
Following the morning practice, Monken said his team was ready to get started for the season and that it was hard to believe that the team was just a couple weeks out from its season opener, Aug. 31, at home against Texas State.
"It is about time we started playing someone else, because we have two weeks," said Monken. "I told the team that two weeks from today we are doing just a walkthrough, so it goes by fast. It just feels like yesterday that we showed up at the start of camp and now we are already two weeks into it."
The Golden Eagles will go through its second scrimmage of training camp Saturday evening at Roberts Stadium. Please note the scrimmage is closed to the media and the general public.
