Eagles Get Final Workout in Before Second Fall Scrimmage
The Golden Eagles will go through a closed scrimmage on Saturday.
The team had originally scheduled a second practice for Friday, but instead are slated to hold a skit night for the players, followed by meetings prior to a Saturday night closed scrimmage to the general public and the media.
Second-year coach Todd Monken said that as the week progressed that practices got better each day, but stressed that his team needed to continue that trend and stay consistent heading into the year.
"Today was better," said Monken. "It is never perfect, but you are striving for perfection and hopefully you turn out to have a pretty good product. I liked today the way we worked. We just have to continue to do what we have been doing and do it better. There is no magic playbook. You just have to execute what you believe in better than they do."
With just two over two weeks out from the season opener, Aug. 30, at Mississippi State, it is certain that some decisions on who will play in the opener will come to light after the team's second scrimmage.
"We have a scrimmage tomorrow night and then we are two weeks away from playing," added Monken. "This staff has to figure out who we are going to rep moving forward and gives us the best chance to win up in Starkville."
For Monken, he enjoys watching his team scrimmage as it gives him a barometer on some area where the team may need additional work and is the closest thing to seeing his team in live action before the season opener.
"For us this is a preseason game," said Monken. "We don't have preseason games so this is it where we get a chance to do extended special teams and try all of our young guys. We are going to go live and we are going to see which guys can help us this fall. We are a young football team and we are going to have to use all of those guys."
