HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through its third two-a-day practice of training camp here Wednesday, working both practice sessions on the game field at Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles practiced in full pads during the morning session, which went a little longer than usual, while returning in helmets and shorts during the hour and a half evening workout.
First-year Southern Miss coach Todd Monken said the extended time during the morning was to make sure that the team got in all its necessary work as they continue to focus on the 2013 season and its opening opponent, Texas State.
"For the most part I thought we did pretty well today," said Monken. "It's hard, because in the morn-ing, it was raining and we were out here on the turf. Sometimes you just don't have it, but we were going to go until we did have it (today), so we kept going. We ended up going a little bit longer. We are going to get the work in, if it takes 2 and half hours, or if it takes 3 and a half hours."
Southern Miss then used the night practice to work extensively with special teams, as well as to get some team drills accomplished.
Training camp continues for the Golden Eagles with a Thursday morning practice and then the team has its final scheduled two-a-day practices on Friday.
