HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss football coach Ellis Johnson extended the team's practice Tuesday morning so that the squad could get some additional work on the kicking phase of the game.

The Golden Eagles, which have typically gone about 2 hours and 25 minutes during their morning practices this fall, extended their workout an extra 20 minutes during the early morning session in full pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.

"We had a one-a-day today, but we had to extend it a little bit because we lost our kicking sessions yesterday," said Johnson, whose team went through the second of two-a-day practices on Monday. "We went about 2 hours, 45 minutes and, for the most part, they pushed through it pretty well. We did get some good heat at the end that tested them a little bit."

Johnson said the team had a good practice overall as a team but stressed the team still has a lot of improvement after the squad's 13th practice of camp.

"We're about halfway on our pads practices," said Johnson. "Offensively, we're going to have to figure out who we are. We're working on things now that are not our complexion and we're going to have to tweak it and adapt to what we have.

"Defensively, I think we're doing a good job. We're running around; we're having fun; they know what they are doing, but frankly it's hard to tell where we are because they are getting too many free shots and are not getting challenged."

The Golden Eagles return to practice Wednesday when they hold their final two-a-day workouts during fall camp.
