Long Day for Golden Eagle Football Team Saturday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Saturday was a long day for the Southern Miss football team.
Not only did the Golden Eagles go through its first scrimmage of fall camp, the team also participated in its annual media day, attended Eagle FanFare at the Lake Terrace Convention Center and finished its non-football activities with a team photo.
The day, though, started with the scrimmage.
Golden Eagle senior quarterback Nick Mullens did not disappoint in the day's scrimmage that saw him throw five touchdown passes, including three to newcomer Isaiah Jones. The duo combined for a 50-yard, 14-yard and 3-yard scoring passes. Jones ended the day with five catches for 72 yards.
Junior Ito Smith added 51 yards rushing on three carries and George Payne, in his first extensive action in over a year, tallied 84 yards on seven carries with a long rush of 42 and a seven-yard scoring rush.
Defensively, Xavier Thigpen was unofficially credited with four sacks, while Draper Riley added a pair.
Following the scrimmage, over 20 players Golden Eagles met with media representatives in the Thad Cochran Center. Coach Jay Hopson finished the media day festivities with a 15-minute answer session.
The Golden Eagles take tomorrow off, before returning to the practice fields on Monday morning with their first two-a-day practice of the fall.
