HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss went through the first of three two-a-day football practices scheduled this week here Monday on the Golden Eagle campus.
After going through a three-hour workout during the morning session in full pads at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility, the Golden Eagles followed that with an hour, 15-minute evening practice in shorts and helmets in Roberts Stadium.
According to Golden Eagle first-year coach Todd Monken, the squad looked a little sluggish in the morning workout after Southern Miss after coming off its first day off, on Sunday, since the start of camp on Aug. 2. The team, though, ended the day crisper with a session under the lights that included several periods of special teams work.
Despite a sloppy practice in the morning, Monken said his team just needs to continue to battle and he thinks that they will.
"Until we fight, scratch and claw for everything that we want, we are not going to get it," said Monken after the morning practice. "Our guys have more (in them), they are just not there yet."
The two-a-day practices on Monday, the second of four scheduled during training camp, give the Golden Eagles now 12 workouts into their training camp as the squad continues to prepare for the 2013 season and its opening game at home against Texas State on Aug. 31.
The Golden Eagles return to practice Tuesday morning and are scheduled to work in shoulder pads and shorts.
