HATTIESBURG, Miss. - First-year Golden Eagle head coach left the field inside M.M. Roberts Stadium on Friday morning with an extra step after his squad completed one of their best practices of fall camp.
"Effort wise, we saw some things that physically looked a lot better," said Johnson. "I'm sure when we go into position meetings, we'll find some missed assignments and some little things. We're still a long way from home, but I thought today was the best practice in keeping with tempo from beginning to end."
Southern Miss practiced in just shoulder pads but Johnson was pleased with the physicality of his team on both sides.
"It looked like during our inside drill that there was a lot more collision, a lot more quickness and execution on the offensive side," Johnson said. "On the defense side, they were striking a lot better and separating a lot better.
It was the final practice for the team before Saturday's closed scrimmage, the first of fall camp. Johnson said on Wednesday that the staff expects to go for roughly two-hours in the Mississippi heat.
As for his role on Friday, Johnson said, "I just sit there and look at the big picture, and I thought today was one of the best we've had in pads - no question about it."
