Eagles Work Through First Scrimmage of Fall Camp
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through its first intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp here Saturday night, executing a 90-plus play script in the light rain at Roberts Stadium.
For second-year coach Todd Monken, he saw good things from both sides of the ball including some tough rushing from his crop of running backs.
"It was great," said Monken. "The intensity was fantastic. From a physical standpoint, the guys who needed to be physical did. I thought the running backs ran hard - as hard as I've been around. I saw Ito Smith, Jalen Richard and George Payne run over some guys. Tez (Parks) is going to be fine. He just hasn't been here. I am so excited about our running backs."
Payne led the running attack with 108 yards on 11 carries, including rushing scores from 49- and 3-yards out. Smith tallied 60 yards on 11 carries and Richard and Parks collected 30 yards apiece.
Sophomore quarterback Nick Mullens added 92 yards passing on 9-of-18 throws, while Cole Weeks went 11-of-14 with one interception for 119 yards which included a 13-yard scoring strike to Tyler Walker.
It was not only the offense that got praise from Monken, but the defense did as well with Monken praising the way they hit and created turnovers.
The Golden Eagles now will take tomorrow off from the practice field and return to their normal workout schedule Monday morning with an 8 a.m., practice as Southern Miss will utilize its third two-a-day during the fall camp.
